As Any True Southern Gentleman Should Know…

March 29, 2010

Golden Flake Potato Chips are the true potato chips of the South. Sure other brands would suffice — Lay’s, etc. — but nothing compares to the unique flavor that is a Golden Flake Potato Chip. It is like tasting the South if every bite. And no, I’m not referring to the stereotypical, racist, ignorant South made infamous by Hollywood and outsiders. No, this the taste of a hot day wasting away in your Mamaw’s backyard while the smells of honeysuckle and homemade pickled peppers waft through the air. It’s the taste of screened-in back porches, shelling purple-hulled peas and skipping church in order to watch “Dick Williams’ Magic Land” on WWMC out of Memphis.

Golden Flake is not a brand for the pretentious or those with overly sophisticated pallets. It doesn’t come in flavors such as “Foi Gras,” “Shalot and Thyme” or “Roasted Peking Duck.” It is for s simpler person with a simpler taste. It does, however, come in semi-exotic flavors such as “Dill Pickle,” Honey BBQ” and my personal favorite, “Sweet Heat.”
Lets we forget, Golden Flake is the official chip of the Alabama Crimson Tide and they were the sponsors, along with Coca Cola, of the Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant Show. And if they were good enough for the Bear, then surely they are good enough for us mere mortals.
